Reserves Match Reports 2008/09

Kent League Division 2
Saturday 15th November 2008
Hythe Town 1 - 2 Herne Bay

With both Dan Cook & James Turner returning Deery had a stronger team for what was going to be a very physical encounter against a very strong Hythe Town who used some of their 1st team players.
Hythe started the game well & put the young Bay boys under pressure, with only 2 minutes on the clock Hythe should taken the lead only for a well timed tackle from Ross Brown who saved the day for the Bay, but after 11 minutes the back four were caught out trying to play a high tight line & with Shaun Smith having to come to try & cover, the striker just lobbed him & Hythe were one up.
Again on 14 minutes a long through ball caught Bay central defenders out but this  time the striker hit the shot wide, with the Bay boys now getting kicked all round the park by a very physical & older Hythe team & with the nice old Referee & his two assistant trying to keep up with the young Bay team Hythe were enjoying there Saturday afternoon out.
In the 26 minute the Hythe number 7 committed his 7th foul & yes your right the dear old referee had a chat & smile, it looked like he was trying to take off  Bainesy shirt but with Bay now staring to play the quick flowing football they are known for & it was not long before the Bay got level & after some very good pressure if was left to James Turner to head  home & now Bay were up for the challenge & with brother Michael Turner  hitting a shot wide it was all Bay.
On what was a rare break for Hythe they should have had a penalty in the 40 minute but the poor old Referee was still trying to get back from the Hythe half where Bay had been camped for the last 15 minutes, the young Bay were not finished & right on half time a good build up from Bay saw  a lovely cross from Joe Evan just slide across the goal.
With the score at 1-1 each & after a good chat from Deery & Rob the Bay came out with a very good & solid high tempo performance in the 2nd half, with Joe Evan & Simon Moore getting more control plus skipper Stephen Baines  showing some of the Hythe boys his party tricks which brought a good laugh from the young Bay boys & their loyal supporters.
It was all Bay but with no goals at the end of all their total control with good play coming down both flanks from Sam Kettle &  Chris Patey plus Jack Winder & the tremendous Turner brothers, plus the two central Dan Cook & Ross Brown were in total control of the Hythe strikers & were getting forward on all free kick & boy was there plenty of them & l stopped counting when it got to over 40, so at last in the 60 minute the dear old Referee book the Hythe number 7 who had the cheek to disagree it was only his 11th  foul !
Bay took off Jack Winder & Rob Lawrence came on to join the fun & the Hythe back four soon let him know what was going on, so even more free kick for the Bay side to try & get the winner, Lawrence was put through by a great boy from James Turner only to see his effort go tamely wide when scoring would have been easier, then Joe Evans was replaced by Simon King.
With the time now running out Bay were camp in the Hythe 18 yard box & were missing to many chances Bainesy should done better with a free kick & a shot, but then a very good run by Chris Patey & interchanging by him & Rob Lawrence saw Lawrence’s  quality cross be turned home by a great finished by Michael Turner, to the young Bay boy relief & Deery & Rob.
But then Deery piled even more pressure on the now knackered Hythe team by putting Steven Gilbert on for one of the Turner boys & what does Gilby do he tries to  finishing yet another great move by the Bay only to be brought down in penalty box, over to you Mr Cool Cookie but a poor penalty from the normal reliable.
Bay should have played out the remaining few minutes with their normal football but fear nearly got the better of them but they held on for a very good win against the most physical side they have seen so far this season.
I was ask by some Hythe supporters how & why some of these boys aren’t in what they called our very poor 1st team (well they would wouldn't they). That is now Dover, Faversham & Hythe who think the Bay have got a very talented res side, so Deery/Rob & the boys keep  doing what you are all good at & one day it will happen you cant keep a good team & manager down for ever.

Man of the match was the Turner boys Michael & James.

HAUC Divisions 1&2 Cup second round
Saturday 8th November 2008
Margate 1 - 3 Herne Bay

Bay started this game with 3 or 4 missing from the normal line up & against a young Margate side found themselves up against it in the first  10 minutes. As early as the 2nd minute Bay should have gone 1 down with the defence all over the place & with keeper Shaun Smith beaten only a goal line clearance by Fraser Rogers saved the day.
This warning got the Bay boy’s going & an excellent through ball from Joe Nelder  found Michael Turner  with plenty still to do but a fantastic round across Margate's back four & a bullet drive beat the Margate keeper with ease. But the Bay’s lead only lasted 2 minutes. First team  player Fraser Rogers  finding the game  difficult   gifted  Margate  with a equaliser. 1-1  & only 15 minutes played.
Bay were playing too deep  & Nelder was alone up front & finding life pretty lonely. With the weather getting wetter by the minute  plus the strong wind behind them Margate were pushing forward only to be caught out by a great cross from Jack  Winder which the keeper only half cleared & then Nelder shot wide after 25 minutes.
After yet another poor defensive pass Shaun Smith kept Bay  in the game. Some of the boys were giving the ball away far too often but the young Bay boys tried to play the normal fast flowing game & Turner forced another corner in the 35th minute.
With Bay now getting back to their normal game it was not long before they got in front again. Bay were getting some lovely crosses in & Margate were finding it hard to clear the lines, so when defender Chris Patey hit a fabulous ball into the box Joe Nelder timed his run perfectly & scored. 2-1. Now, could they hold out until half-time?  well the defence tried hard to help Margate with another give away ball but the Margate striker hit the post.
The 2nd  half started well with Bay looking happier after their half time talk from Deery/Rob plus they had the slope & wind in there favour. Turner was brought down & took the free kick but the shot was cleared by the keeper after a goal area kick about with several players not finding their scoring boots in time.
Simon Moore hit a free kick wide but the Bay were getting stronger by the minute & after yet another great run by Turner & with Margate now on the back foot, skipper Stephen Baines won a good tackle & found Jack Winder who hit a low cross for Joe Nelder to just tap in & Bay were 3-1 & though to the next round.
Bay took off Simon King & Joe Nelder & brought on Rob Lawrence & Joe Evans who both made life very hard for the very tired & now slow back four, then Stephen Gilbert came on for Jack Winder, with Bay now in total control they ran the clock down with their passing game.
Yet another win but it was more pleasing for the Management because Bay were not at their best today. But  with great young  players who are willing to listen & learn the future looks good for the rest of the season.

Man of the match Sam Kettle playing in his best  position in the centre at the back.

Kent Soccer Company Floodlight Trophy east
Wednesday 5th November 2008
Herne Bay 5 - 2 Dover Athletic

Again this young team showed what real prospects they are. Playing against Floodlight League East Division leaders and unbeaten Dover Athletic they played them off the park with a display of superb passing on a  very slippery and muddy Winch’s pitch.
Again it was the Turner twins who gave the Dover defenders so many problems. A goal apiece in the first thirty minutes gave Bay the upper hand.  A poor defensive clearance allowed Dover back in the game but this didn’t deter Bay’s attacking intent.
The second half started much the same as the first with Bay looking threatening with almost every attack. Neil Perkins increased the lead with a well taken header after ten minutes . James Turner then was put through by brother Michael and he made no mistake slotting under Herne Bay lad, Robert Lindsey, in goal for Dover.
Substitute Scott Frazer made it five, turning the ball in from close range after the Dover defence failed to clear a free kick. Bay then sat back on their lead which allowed Dover to pull another goal back..
Another solid performance which was very much enjoyed by all at the ground. The supporters applauded every one off the pitch and my how they deserved it.

Faversham Town 2 - 2 Herne Bay

Another scintillating performance by this young team that should have been at least 4 up by half time! The very impressive Turner twins showed tremendous ball skills to completely bamboozle the Faversham defenders . It was left to the Town keeper  to keep their side in the game but even he stood no chance with James Turner’s fantastic strike from fully 35 yards  which crashed into the top corner to give Bay the early lead. The shot was hit so quickly that before the keeper could react the ball was in the back of the net.
Turner should have doubled the lead with the next attack. From a Max Ciano deep cross to the far post he headed inches wide with the goal at his mercy. Town hit back immediately and from a through ball Ciano was adjudged  to have pulled down the forward and a penalty awarded from which Shaun Smith just failed to smother the kick. The rest of the half belonged to Bay and Town’s keeper. On three more occasions Turner went into the box and three times the keeper pulled off top drawer saves.
After the interval  Town started to dominate play pinning Bay in their own half. They took the lead in the 55th minute. From a cross Smith dropped the ball. The Faversham forwards had three attempts at scoring but frantic goal line defending kept the ball  out. The ball was eventually cleared but struck the back of Simon Moore’s boot and ricocheted to the forward who fired the ball across Smith into the far corner of the goal. Bay replaced James Turner with Rob Lawrence and they immediately started getting back into game with their slick passing.  Seven minutes later they were back level. Stephen Baines lobbed a ball over the back line for Michael Turner to race through to slot the ball under the keeper.
A very entertaining game of football, in absolutely dire conditions.  A credit to both sides. This Bay side has so much potential and they really look as if they are enjoying playing the football. Keep it up lads your time will come.
Anthony just has to keep them together playing this style of football.

Kent Intermediate Cup first round
Saturday 25th October 2008
Deal Town 0 - 3 Herne Bay

Bay totally dominated todays game after their lack-luster performance last weekend.
With the management not inundated with first teamers Bay were able to pick a young and more familiar side and what a differnce it made, the quick flowing football Bay played was outstanding.
Bay played a more familiar formation of 4-5-1 with Simon (Sid) Moore playing the holding midfield role which totally settled the side from the start.
Bay's possession in the first half was outstanding. Total domination which left Bay's Keeper Shaun Smith redundant for the whole half. Unfortuanatly Bay were unable to capatalise on some great play, especially from Jack Winder, Joe Evans and the Turner twins.
Bay's second half performance was even better than the first. Bainsey and Sid pulled all the strings in the centre of midfield and with the pace of the four forward players it was just a matter of time before the breakthrough. In the 55th minute it came after some good play from Jay Turner who laid the ball on for Joe Evans to score.
Bay kept the pressure up but the next chance fell to Deal after a very rare mistake from Ross Brown. Shaun Smith pulled of a great save low down to his right.
Bay made changes which meant a debut for another Under 18 Jack Scott, and allowed Mark (Sharkie) Jones to enter the fray.
Bay's second goal came from captain Stephen Baines who got to the near post to beat the goalkeeper and defenders to flick in. The third fell to Sharkie who beat the out coming goalkeeper to lob after good work from the midfield again.
It was a total joy to watch a Herne Bay side play football for ninety minutes and not once drop to the oppenents standard which has happened to Bay sides this season.

Tunbridge Wells 1 - 3 Herne Bay

Report by Glenn Harris

Bay started poorly giving away a penalty in the first 10 minutes, but the Wells were unable to get the spot kick on target and Bay started to get to grips with pitch after that (which was poor to say the least)
Bay began to dominate possession and were unlucky on a number of occasions. It was the opponents, however, that made the breakthrough when a hopefull long ball found its way between Brad Ashmore and Danny Cook, neither of whom made a decision and Wells centre forward nipped in to score.
Bay created more chances, one drive from Stephen Baines that just went passed the post and a shot from Joe Evans that skimmed over the bar. Eventually Bay got back on level terms when Gilby's free-kick found its way to Sam Kettle who headed across goal for Max Caino to hammer home( Side foot wound have done). The teams went in at half-time all square which on reflection was fair.
The second half saw chances at both ends, one of which induced an outstanding point blank saveby Brad Ashmore. The other was when Lee Taylor defeated the off-side trap and bringing a very good save out of the Wells keeper. Substitutions made the difference in this match when Gary Cooper made way for Stuart Fitcher and Max Caino made way for Luke Alegro. Joe Evans was put up front and Bay went back to a 4-4-2 and it made a huge difference straight away.
Joe Evans, with a measured cross, found Stuart Fitchie who volleyed past the Wells Keeper.
Wells kept battling but were mostly unable break through Bay's defence. When they did, Keeper Brad Ashmore was more than up to the task of keeping them out.
Bay's third goal from the penalty spot after Stephen Baines was brought down in the area and Danny Cook made no mistake with his penalty.
It was nice to see the Reserves get the result they totally deserved, but harder matches will see how far this team can go.

Team:
Brad Ashmore; Chris Patey; Luke Potter; Danny Cook; Sam Kettle; Max Caino; Stephen Baines; Stephen Gilbert; Joe Evans;
Lee Taylor; Gary Cooper; Carlisle Bleau; Stuart Fitcher; Luke Alegro

Larkfield V Herne Bay

Report by Glenn Harris

Herne Bay went today's game with an addition to the non playing staff, Rob Allen has taken the position of Assistant Manager. Bay also had first teamers Simon Moore, Wil Dunlop and Adam Todd, who all needing match fitness, playing today which helped the youngsters around them.
Bay got off to a good start playing some attractive football at times without creating too many chances. They did make the breakthrough after 18 minutes when Stephen Hanson scored direct from a free kick.
Larkfield got back on level terms when Herne Bay over-played the ball in defence and unfortunately Simon Moore gifted Larkfield striker an open goal.
Bay continued to play some lovely football with their youngest player, Joe Evans, pulling all the strings. Wing back and Man of the Match Chris Patey was putting some lovely balls into the box but Bay were unable to capitalise on them.
Bay did get the ball in the back of the net through James Turner but he was adjudged to have been offside.

The second half saw much of the same with Bay playing much the better football. The addition of Michael Turner and Lee Taylor after half-time added more pace to Bay's attacks but still they couldn't make it pay.
With 10 minutes to go Bay broke quickly and unfortunately for the management Stephen Hanson scored his second (will they ever hear the last of it).
This was a much better team performance than Tuesday evening lets hope that it will continue into the next match on Tuesday.

Team:
Brad Ashmore; Chris Patey; Stuart Fitch; Wil Dunlop; Danny Cook; Simon Moore; Stephen Hanson; Joe Evans; Michael Lovelock;
Adam Todd; James Turner; Lee Taylor; Michael Turner; Stephen Gilbert; Gary Cooper.

Whitstable 1 - 1 Herne Bay

Report by Glenn Harris

The Herne Bay youngsters went into today's match after a disappointing loss against Bly Spartans Reserves last weekend but they
looked up for this match from the minute the team got to the Belmont.
The game started well and the swift passing and speed of play kept Whitstable on the back foot. Bay played a 3 5 2 system which worked well as the strong back three of Danny Cook, Stephen Hanson and Chris Patey kept the Whitstable forwards under control.
Bay were unlucky not to take the lead early on with the pace of James Turner and Danny Williams up front. Rob Lawrence broke down the right and his cross found Danny Williams but he couldn't get this shot on target. Unfortunately it was Whitstable who took the lead after 15 minutes with a quick counter attack.
Bay were unlucky not to get back on level terms before the break when Stuart Fitch crossed for James Turner, his shot was saved and the rebound fell to Danny Williams who's shot was goalbound only to be saved by a hand of a defender. Shame the referee didn't see it!
Ten minutes before half-time Rob Lawrence went down under a challenge from a Whitstable defender which left him clutching his right wrist. It was found later at hospital that his wrist was broken in three places.
The second half saw Bay make a couple of changes which meant that Bay were now fielding an all Under 18's centre midfield which seemed to work very well. Bay kept their passing game going which by now was first class.
Bay started to dominate the game and their midfield combined to put Danny Williams through one on one with the keeper but he was unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
Bay then got a free kick 25 yards out. Robert Joyce curled it into the bottom corner for a well deserved equaliser. Bay totally out-played Whitstable on the day and were unlucky not to go away with the win. Man of the Match was Luke Potter, but the whole team deserves a mention for this great team display.

Team:
Brad Ashmore; Chris Patey; Danny Cook; Stephen Hanson; Rob Lawrence; Joe Evans; Luke Potter; Lee Taylor;
Danny Williams; James Turner; Robert Joyce; Michael Green; Chevan Xavier; Michael Lovelock
